An Evacuee’s Story of his time in Pembridge

10-year-old Henry Mayers was evacuated from Tiber Street School in Liverpool with his elder brother Melville and 55 other pupils. Now aged 94, he has fond memories of the three years he spent in Pembridge and here he shares them with us.

Many of these children from Tiber Street School, Liverpool spent the war years as evacuees in Pembridge. The parish accommodated 131 evacuee schoolchildren from Liverpool, West Ham and other major cities and coastal areas. Others were billeted at Broxwood and Staunton on Arrow.
