D Day 80 – Sponsored Cycle Ride through Normandy
Pembridge resident and local businessman Stephen Jacques is cycling through Normandy
to raise funds for the Royal British Legion. Stephen will be taking part in Pedal Normandy
Beaches 2024. The three-day cycle ride will mark the 80 th anniversary of the D Day landings,
remembering the sacrifices of all those who fought in both World Wars.
The 351km cycle ride will tour all five D Day beaches: Sword, Juno, Gold, Omah, and Utah.
It will include Bayeux, Pegasus Bridge, and Arromnaches-les-Bains. Pegasus Bridge was
where the glider pilots trained at RAF Shobdon landed to start the liberation of France.
Pembridge and Shobdon RBL visited this area last year. RBL members were in awe of the
skill of the glider pilots who manged to land successfully on a narrow strip of land, between a
canal and a river, in the dark and deep and into enemy territory.
This is not the first sponsored ride undertaken by Stephen, last year he took part in a ride
near Ypres as seen below.
