Pembridge Man Sets 50-Year Record
On Remembrance Sunday, a Pembridge man will achieve the milestone of having played the Last Post for 50 consecutive years at the village War Memorial.
As a schoolboy, aged 12, Niall Roberts wanted to pay his respects to earlier generations who had given their lives in the two World Wars. Starting in 1975, he has played The Last Post and Reveille on his bugle at the Pembridge War Memorial every year since. The former Pembridge C E Primary school pupil was inspired by the school’s annual remembrance service held at the War Memorial in the school grounds facing the A44. It always attracts a large crowd to observe the two-minute silence and join the Royal British Legion’s parade to St Mary’s Church.
Royal British Legion Branch Chairman, Graham Hudson said, “Now in 2024, we thank and congratulate Niall Roberts on his marvelous achievement over so many years. Turning up for 50 consecutive Remembrance Sundays is not an easy task for anyone. There have been problems to overcome;- academic exams; being away at University; working away in London; Illness; family commitments; travel issues, and poor weather. This dedication and commitment achieved the 50 consecutive year record. It is an example of a younger generation still committed to Remembrance.”
Niall, now aged 61, and his family and friends will join the Pembridge & Shobdon branch of the Royal British Legion to recognise his exceptional service and dedication.
He will be awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Royal British Legion and a long stem white rose (as given to D Day 80 veterans) will be given him by his family.
