Pembridge Film Nights
The season of feel-good films continues to attract sell-out audiences at the New Inn, Pembridge.
There were few dry eyes in the house for the showing of “The Great Escaper”. A poignant retelling
of the true story of WWII veteran, Bernie Jordan, who “escaped” from his nursing home to visit
the Normandy beaches for the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Starring Michael Caine and Glenda
Jackson, both in their last feature film, the acting was superb.
Here’s some exciting news about the rest of the season.
Midnight in Paris (12)
Coming up on February 29th we’re showing Midnight in Paris, which (like Pleasantville and About
Time which we showed earlier in the season) is a great film which most people seem to have missed.
It’s a magical romantic comedy that pays nostalgic homage to Paris.
Gil Pender is a Hollywood screenwriter who has recently come to Paris to try to rewrite his debut
novel. One night, as Gil wanders the streets, he is offered a lift in a vintage car that takes him back to
the Paris of the roaring 1920s, where he meets a coterie of his favourite writers, artists, and
intellectuals. His experiences lead him to re-evaluate his life, love, and work.
The star-studded cast includes Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Kathy Bates and
Adrien Brody. The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and the Guardian said
“Midnight in Paris is a cinematic soufflé that rises to perfection, a wry, funny, touching picture, with
sufficient asperity to give a sting to the nostalgia it embraces. You can book now for this film.
One Life (12A)
We’ve managed to get permission to show One Life on Thursday 7th March, only a few days after its
release outside the big circuits.
One Life is an incredible true story of bravery and heroism featuring Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a
young London broker who, in the months leading up to the Second World War, rescued 669 children
from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of
the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food,
and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many
children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed?
A superb cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter, and Johnny Flynn. We are
sure this will sell out quickly, so why not book for both Midnight in Paris (already selling
well) and One Life at the same time? Book here
